Be it ever so humble…

I know it doesn’t look like much. But to us, it’s a dream come true. It’s ours, our own little cabin. Nestled in the woods.

We’ve been working on this project for years now, a little at a time, on weekends, whenever we could get away from the city. We mixed the concrete for the footings ourselves, hauling water from the pond in buckets and using the wheelbarrow as a cement mixer. It’s been hard, hard work. But we’ve loved every minute of it. Every hour we work brings us that much closer to realizing our dream.

Now that we are actually putting the “skin” on the structure, we can hardly contain our excitement. Pretty soon it will have real working windows if all goes well.

For now, we are staying in a prospector tent, hung inside the cabin frame. If you look through the window openings, you can see it there. We’ve spent so many nights in that tent talking about how cozy we’ll be when we have solid walls.

But we’ve had fun roughing it. The Four Dog stove we ordered from the states lived up to its reputation, keeping us warm in the bitter days of January. Our friends, George and Eva, dragged that stove all the way from Indiana. We raise a glass to them everytime we light it. We’ve even cooked TexMex on that stove and had hot water to wash up with afterward. We can’t help feeling nostalgic because we know those prospector days will soon be relegated to memory. So we’ve decided to pitch our tent permanently, for guests, or as a dining hall.

We have a long way to go before our cabin can be occupied. Until then, we’ll dream in our prospector, counting the weekends left in summer that we can work.

Where am I?
